TVI secures Euro 2020 rights in Portugal

Portuguese free-to-air broadcaster TVI has secured rights to 22 matches from the UEFA 2020 European Championship national team football competition in a sublicensing deal with pay-TV network Sport TV.

TVI’s exclusive free-to-air coverage will include all Portuguese national team matches, nine group-stage matches, four round-of-16 fixtures, two quarter-finals, the two semi-finals and the final itself. The network will also provide extended highlights on its TVI24 channel.

Sport TV acquired rights to all Euro 2020 matches last February in a deal that marked the first time a Portuguese broadcaster had secured both pay-television and free-to-air rights. This deal with TVI is an effort to recoup some of its investment.

Although this sublicensing deal, Sport TV will show all 51 matches, as originally planned, with its free-to-air coverage airing on the SportTV+ channel, which is available in around 92 per cent of Portuguese households.

Portugal won the competition in 2016 and have been drawn in group A alongside France, Germany and a to-be-determined play-off winner in Group F at this year’s competition, which gets underway on June 12.

TVI’s director Nuno Santos says that this agreement with Sport TV will grant “transversal content in the channel’s offer”, granting “potential investment return in advertising”.

According to Sport TV’s Nuno Ferreira Pires, the deal will allow that all Portuguese will have access to “the most expected competition in Europe, where Portugal will be defending ths title of European champions”.
